Holly Downes is an undergraduate student at Durham University. In summer 2022, Holly took part in the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship, a 12-week programme providing students with the opportunity to contribute to a research project at one of Canada’s 70 participating universities. There are over 2,000 projects to choose from, ranging from engineering and maths through to the humanities, which successful applicants work on full-time as a research intern.

This case study originates from the research conducted by Dr Matt Smith, Reader in Applied Theatre and Puppetry at the University of Portsmouth, as part of the UK-Ukraine R&I twinning grants scheme. It highlights the way that culture like puppet theatre can survive conflict and be part of social reconstruction.
