This blog explores insights from key participants in the Second International Twinning Conference 2024.
The UK-Ukraine Second International Twinning Conference 2024 brought together political leaders and representatives of higher educational institutions to discuss the future of Ukraine’s educational sector, post-war recovery and collaborative opportunities. The conference was a key event in the calendar of the UK-Ukraine Twinning scheme, an initiative that partners UK universities with Ukrainian universities for collaboration and mutual benefit amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Among the key participants in the conference were Hanna Davydenko from the Open International University of Human Development "Ukraine" and Ashley Goodall from the Ukraine Britain Business Council (UBBC). In this blog, we explore their insights from the conference, highlighting the critical role of inclusive education and the growing network of support for Ukrainian universities.
Hanna Davydenko: Championing Inclusive Education in Ukraine
Hanna Davydenko, representing one of Ukraine’s largest universities, spoke passionately about the unique role her institution plays in the country’s educational landscape. "We are one of the inclusive higher educational institutions in Ukraine," Hanna explained, emphasising their dual mission: to provide education for students with disabilities and to foster an inclusive society. With over 16,000 students, the university is not only educating future leaders but also equipping them with the skills and values necessary to build a more inclusive Ukraine.
Hanna pointed out that the war has increased the number of people with disabilities in Ukraine, making the university’s mission even more urgent. "Our experience and scientific research in inclusive education are vital," she stated, reinforcing the university's commitment to making a significant impact during these challenging times.
Ashley Goodall: Building Bridges Between Education and Business
Adding an external perspective to the discussions, Ashley Goodall from the Ukraine Britain Business Council (UBBC) spoke about UBBC’s role in connecting universities with business leaders and government bodies in the UK. As a supporter of the Twinning initiative, Ashley highlighted the potential for long-term collaborations that extend beyond immediate recovery efforts. "The more we understand what universities do and what their capabilities are, the better we can connect them with opportunities," he explained.
Despite the complexities of fostering international partnerships in the context of war, both Hanna and Ashley recognised the clear benefits. For Ukrainian universities, these partnerships offer platforms for students to learn English, engage in academic exchanges, and integrate into global educational and professional networks.
Ashley reflected on the progress made in the two years since UBBC joined the Twinning programme, expressing optimism for the future. "This programme gives universities lots of opportunities, from basic language learning to complex academic and professional exchanges," he said, hopeful that British universities will visit Ukraine once it becomes safe to do so.
Reflections on the Second International Twinning Conference
As the conference concluded, both Hanna and Ashley expressed their satisfaction with the event and the progress made. "This is an excellent event, well run, and it’s amazing to see the range of people showcasing what they’re doing," Ashley remarked, capturing the spirit of collaboration and resilience that defined the gathering.
The UK-Ukraine Second International Twinning Conference 2024 not only underscored the ongoing efforts to rebuild Ukraine’s educational sector, but also showcased the strength of international partnerships in driving inclusive education and broadening professional opportunities for all involved. Through shared values and a commitment to inclusivity, the partnerships featured at this conference offer a pathway to a brighter, more connected future for Ukraine’s educational institutions.
