Five years ago, three pioneering UK universities — Warwick, Essex, and Edinburgh — became the first in the country to join European Universities alliances under the European Universities Initiative. At a time of change in the UK’s relationship with Europe, their decision signalled a commitment to sustaining UK-European collaboration. Since then, many more UK universities have joined alliances, each bringing their own strengths to a growing network.
Five years on, and with the UK looking to rejoin Erasmus+, European Universities alliances are more significant than ever. The following three case studies from the University of Warwick, the University of Essex and the University of Edinburgh reveal how UK institutions continue to strengthen their European connections.
The University of Warwick co-founded the EUTOPIA Alliance in 2018 and in 2019 EUTOPIA was selected as part of the first cohort of European Universities funded by Erasmus+. From its inception, EUTOPIA has placed a strong focus on research and innovation alongside education. As a research-intensive institution, and as a UK university navigating the post-Brexit landscape, Warwick has found EUTOPIA to be an important mechanism for sustaining and strengthening our European research network.
Our strong engagement with and support of the European Universities Initiative sent a clear and powerful message, both within the university and to our partners across Europe, that Warwick is European at heart and committed to collaborating with leading researchers across the continent.
While EUTOPIA fosters bilateral and multilateral research collaboration through a variety of initiatives, one key strand of EUTOPIA’s research activity focusses on supporting early career researchers, who have faced the dual challenges of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic while trying to establish their careers. To help counteract this, since 2020 over 50 collaborative PhD students have benefitted from joint supervision between Warwick and EUTOPIA partners, gaining access to two world-class research environments and expanding their networks as they complete their research training.
The EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowships (SIF) postdoctoral fellowships programme, funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions grant, has supported 76 postdoctoral researchers across four cohorts, including 21 fellows hosted at Warwick across all three of our faculties. Through a tailored training programme and secondment opportunities within and beyond the alliance, EUTOPIA SIF is helping to shape the next generation of European research leaders. Many fellows have gone on to secure prestigious grants and academic positions across Europe and the UK, including at Warwick.
One standout example is Dr Hannes Houck, a former SIF fellow who was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2023 and an ERC Starting Grant in 2025 to continue his work at the interface of organic synthesis and polymer chemistry at Warwick. His success is a powerful testament to the strength of the EUTOPIA model and Warwick’s enduring commitment to research excellence and European collaboration.
When the University of Edinburgh joined the Una Europa alliance as one of the founding members in 2019, our focus was on shared outputs across education and research. We have since discovered that our membership of the alliance also has the potential to transform how the university delivers its civic mission.
Una Europa places a strong emphasis on student empowerment and civic engagement, encouraging students to become proactive actors in their communities. Each year, through events like the Una Europa Student Congress, our students collaborate in international teams of student peers to design solutions to global challenges and learn how to articulate and present their ideas to a wider audience.
Another flagship initiative of the alliance is the Student Incubator, a hybrid programme which brings together students from across all 11 member universities to design team projects to tackle their chosen topic – from AI in healthcare to preserving endangered languages!
We focus on widening participation, ensuring that these transformative experiences are open to students from all backgrounds and the impact reaches far beyond our campuses. Edinburgh students have proudly represented Una Europa at the European Student Assembly in Strasbourg, working with student representatives from across Europe to draft policy recommendations on key societal challenges. These proposals are not simply theoretical but are shared directly with European policymakers, giving our students a genuine voice in shaping Europe’s future.
Another recent cross-border initiative was Una Europa’s Virtual Exchange for Sustainability (Una.VEx), which brought together students from across Europe and Africa to collaborate in an online format on sustainability challenges to offer practical, community-driven solutions. Involvement in the programme prompted lasting change for the students, boosted their confidence and encouraged them to implement local solutions. The next edition of the Virtual Exchange for Sustainability is launching soon and we can’t wait to hear how our students will do next and how the university’s membership of the alliance can empower them to become active and engaged members of their respective communities.
University of Essex has been a proud partner in two European Alliances and Networks from the early days of the European Universities Initiative. Essex is a member of YUFE (Young Universities for the Future of Europe) and YERUN (Young European Research Universities Network). Our involvement in these consortia allows Essex to engage with around 30 higher education peers across the continent, from senior leaders contributing to the direction of European higher education policy to undergraduates and early career researchers taking advantage of the rich opportunities for mobility and interaction with students and staff across the partner institutions.
YUFE is a values-driven partnership of ten European universities which integrates education, research, and civic engagement, and is committed to the shared principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. Essex’s membership demonstrates our continued commitment to European collaboration.
Central to YUFE’s offer is a variety of opportunities for European exchange and mobility among staff and students. The flagship programme is the innovative new YUFE Joint Bachelor in Urban Sustainability Studies. With a minimum of two terms abroad for all enrolled students, this joint programme is the first of its kind among the European alliances. The course offers an innovative, interdisciplinary education that equips students with the knowledge, skills and experience to address complex real-life challenges of sustainability and urban development in a European context. University of Essex is currently the only UK degree-awarding partner on a joint bachelor programme delivered by the European alliances. Over the coming years, Essex will host undergraduates as their chosen starting university, as well as contributing existing and newly developed modules, all in a stimulating and welcoming international environment.
Alongside the joint bachelor, we are also delighted to contribute to YUFE’s wider offer of open learning opportunities for students and citizens across the partnership through our programme of OpenYUFE, YUFE Minors and YUFE Academy, among other forms of flexible, skills-based and lifelong learning opportunities. We are excited to welcome the highest number of YUFE students and learners on mobility to Essex during 2025-26. Alongside our cohort of committed and passionate YUFE Student Forum members, we expect these new participants will become enthusiastic ambassadors for the new models of learning, research collaboration, and professional working across boundaries, and thereby to realise French President Macron’s vision for the kind of truly ‘European University’ proposed back in 2017.
Within the wider UUKi Europe Network, a group on the European Universities alliances emerged through the initiative of participating universities, demonstrating their shared drive to strengthen cooperation and mutual learning. This group connects representatives from UK-based alliances to exchange experiences, align activities, and strengthen their collective voice. Current members include University of Edinburgh (Una Europa), University of Essex (YUFE), University of Warwick (Eutopia), University of Glasgow (CIVIS), King's College London (Circle.U), LSE (CIVICA), Coventry University (EUPeace), Durham University (Arqus), University of Birmingham (EUniWell), and the group remains open to welcoming additional universities that are part of European Universities alliances.
