Researchers from universities across the UK have been awarded grants to undertake a range of mobility projects focussed on innovation and entrepreneurial skills development with partners in Israel as part of a new scheme launched last year by UUKi.
The funding, provided by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), will support researchers at all career stages to hone their expertise via international collaboration, specifically building their capabilities and skills in entrepreneurship and Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) innovation by providing them the opportunity to travel and learn from expertise from the region.
This researcher mobility programme will, at the same time, further links with the Israeli ecosystem through existing research and innovation (R&I) collaborations and open the door to new opportunities.
Funded projects will be responding to the research areas prioritised by the UK Government Innovation Strategy and the Integrated Review
Successful partner universities are listed below:
Jamie Arrowsmith, Director of Universities UK International (UUKi), commented:
‘We are very pleased to announce these awards, which go to such a worthwhile selection of projects as part of this new mobility scheme with Israel. These projects will provide a direct route for researchers to develop and learn from their counterparts in the region, and bring best practice back to the UK.
'Israel is an important partner with complementary capabilities and expertise to the UK. The scheme will support areas prioritised in the UK Government Innovation Strategy and offer invaluable opportunities to build and grow lasting collaborations.'
Awardee, Dr Claire Thornton from the Royal Verterinary College, said:
‘I am delighted to be a recipient of funding from the UK-Israel Innovation Researcher Mobility Scheme. The scheme will allow me to strengthen links with researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, investigating how brain energy levels are impaired by prolonged exposure to drugs of abuse and how this might contribute to a relapse to drug taking. By pooling our technical expertise, we hope to unearth mechanisms that restore brain energy, and potentially identify innovative areas for therapeutic intervention.'
A second call is due to launch in September 2023. Interested universities can contact Sophie Punt, Partnerships Manager, UUKi, for further information at uk-israel-mobility@international.ac.uk
