Universities UK International (UUKi) and Mitacs are delighted to announce that they will be renewing their partnership. This agreement renewal was celebrated at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ceremony at the High Commission of Canada, which was held in the United Kingdom on Thursday 20 October.
The agreement renewal not only celebrated the ongoing success of the partnership but, primarily focused on further allowing for UUKi and Mitacs to continue delivering the Globalink Research Internship (GRI) scheme. Additionally, it will provide opportunities for up to 60 UK-based undergraduate students per year to take part in research internships in Canada for two more years. The event in general was also a great opportunity for GRI alumni to reflect on their positive internship experiences.
About the UUKi and Mitacs partnership
Since 2019, UUKi and Mitacs have been working together to increase UK mobility to, and research collaboration with Canada, supporting up to 250 undergraduate students to undertake virtual and in-person research internships through the GRI scheme.
Through GRI, UK-based students have had the opportunity to collaborate with Canadian professors on pertinent global challenges, from exploring how innovate solar engineering techniques can help us to reduce greenhouse gases to assessing the impact of Covid-19 on health care services.
The scheme has and will continue to offer successful applicants the opportunity to access a competitive academic experience in Canada, whilst gaining valuable professional skills and building strong international networks. It will also enable the continued strengthening of the links between UK universities and Canadian institutions.
The next opportunity for universities to submit expressions of interest to participate in the scheme and co-fund their students will be in spring 2023.
I have a lot of thanks to give to Mitacs for this opportunity. It is a wonderful and motivating comfort to know that programmes such as these exist for students like me.

The GRI program truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The research, the people, the country - I embraced every single second. I wholeheartedly recommend the program to any ambitious students with an interest in research, travel, and new opportunities. I hope that for years to come future students will share similar experiences to mine.
