Responding to the launch of the government's 10 Year Health Plan, Vivienne Stern, Chief Executive of Universities UK said:
As the organisations responsible for training the NHS’ high-quality doctors, nurses and thousands of other healthcare workers, universities will be an indispensable partner in delivering the government’s plan to build a health service fit for the future. One in every nine students starting a university course does so in healthcare, and we must work collaboratively and at pace to ensure we can meet future NHS workforce needs.
Rooted in their communities, universities will help train and retain local staff with the future skills our NHS needs, and support moving care from overstretched hospitals back into the community. As well as training the NHS workforce, universities drive research and innovation that leads to life-saving medical breakthroughs and better care across the entire country, so we look forward to working closely with the government to deliver its ambitions.
