Responding to the UK Government’s announcement on 19 December 2022 that the Horizon Europe funding guarantee has been extended, Vivienne Stern MBE, Chief Executive, Universities UK said:
'Universities UK continues to believe that full association to Horizon Europe is the best-case scenario for UK universities. Although two years of delay and uncertainty for the sector since the Trade and Cooperation Agreement was signed have undermined our European collaborations, the guarantee has been critical for ensuring UK universities can continue to participate in Horizon Europe calls.
Therefore, we welcome the announcement that the UKRI guarantee has been extended to cover calls closing by 31 March 2023. This brings much-needed reassurance to UK researchers, institutions and our research partners.
It reinforces the ongoing commitment of all parties to finalise full UK association to Horizon Europe, and while that is a positive development, we need more than a stop-gap solution.
It is vital that there is continued engagement and dialogue between UK and EU counterparts with the aim of securing full UK association to Horizon Europe; enabling UK and EU researchers to continue to work with one another on critical and mutually beneficial research projects.
