Universities UK responds to ruling over University of Sussex free speech challenge

This decision found that the regulator did not act properly in the conduct of its investigation into the University of Sussex.

Academic freedom and freedom of speech are central to a university’s purpose, and the Office for Students has an important role to play in holding them to account. However, the way it carries out this role must be fair, proportionate and follow due process.

As we move forward, universities will want to work closely with the Office for Students to reset relationships and rebuild trust under its new leadership. Effective regulation depends not just on enforcement, but on trust, clarity, and a shared understanding of respective roles.
