Professor Welch has been the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol since September 2022. Professor Welch previously held the position of Vice-President for Service, People and Planning at King’s College London. She has taught at the University of Essex, the Warburg Institute and held leadership positions at University of Sussex and Queen Mary.
Professor Welch is a Professor of Renaissance Studies and has led major research programmes including ‘The Material Renaissance’ and ‘Beyond Text: Performances, Sounds, Images’.
Professor Welch has also served as a Trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum and Chair of Trustees of the Dulwich Picture Gallery. She is currently a Deputy Lieutenant of the County and City of Bristol. Professor Welch is the current Chair of the Russell Group.
