Thirty two UK universities have been awarded funding through the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) Mobility Programme: Study in India.
UKIERI is the largest bilateral education initiative aimed at internationalisation of higher education institutions in India and the UK to promote institutional and individual excellence in educational practices, research, and employability.
The UKIERI Mobility Programme: Study in India scheme sets out to:
- Increase the levels of outward student mobility from the UK, as set out in UUKi's Go International: Stand Out campaign
- Support the employability of UK graduates and help them prepare to be part of a globally competitive workforce
- Support the internationalisation of the Indian higher education sector through the diversification of the student body, and the consolidation of inter-institutional partnerships
Funded by the UK and Indian governments, delivered by the British Council (programme secretariat), Universities UK International (UK delivery partner), and EdCIL in India, the pilot mobility scheme will distribute over GBP 1 million to UK higher education institutions and their Indian university partners to fund short-term mobility for UK students in 2020 and 2021.
The latest announcement will enable up to 600 undergraduate students from the UK to undertake a period of mobility in India during their studies by January 2021. Students will spend between two and eight weeks in India, participating in programmes jointly designed and delivered by their home UK institution and host university in India.
40 short term mobility programmes for UK undergraduates will be funded and will be jointly delivered by UK and Indian universities. The 15 Indian hosts comprise of universities across the country including the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs).
Vivienne Stern, Director, Universities UK International said:
This scheme is a fantastic opportunity for UK and Indian higher education institutions to collaborate to deliver joint mobility opportunities that will benefit both the UK and Indian higher education sectors. Universities UK International is delighted that hundreds of UK students will benefit from these new international opportunities, the likes of which are proven to boost graduate employment outcomes and develop students' personal skills.
Barbara Wickham, OBE, Director British Council India said:
"Over the last fourteen years, UKIERI has made a great contribution to the knowledge ambitions of India and the UK and today we take a new step in our partnership.
We're delighted that 600 young people from 32 UK universities are going to have the experience of a lifetime participating in courses at some of the top universities in India. We look forward to hearing all their exciting stories and the results of all the new networks they will develop. The increase in students going to UK and now to India through this mobility programme is such a powerful symbol of how our young people will be connected in the future."
