Newton Fund
Last updated on Tuesday 3 May 2022 on 2:31pm
We support delivery of the Newton Fund, helping the higher education sector to access funding for international research collaboration and applicants to connect with host institutions in the UK.
The Newton Fund builds scientific and innovation partnerships with 17 partner countries to support their economic development and social welfare, and to develop their research and innovation capacity for long-term sustainable growth. It has a total UK government investment of £735 million up until 2021, with matched resources from the partner countries.
The Newton Fund is managed by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and delivered through seven UK delivery partners, which include the Research Councils, the UK's four national academies, the British Council, Innovate UK and the Met Office.
UUKi's role in supporting the Newton Fund
We support the delivery of the Newton Fund through:
- Delivery support, helping Newton Fund country researchers identify UK collaborators and connecting Newton PhD candidates to host UK institutions
- Representing sector views in the development of the programme through dialogue with delivery partners and BEIS
- Outreach and communications, promoting Newton Fund opportunities to the sector through the monthly Newton Funding Bulletin, university visits, and our biannual Global Research and Innovation Network meetings.

Finding a UK collaborator
When Newton Fund calls are open, our partner request form will be available. If you would like assistance with identifying a potential UK collaborator for an open Newton Fund call, please complete the partner request form at least four weeks before the call deadline and upload the CV of the lead applicant.
If you are a UK researcher and are looking to find a collaborator for a Newton Fund call, please check the Opportunities for Collaboration grid, which we update regularly with partner requests received.
If you are a UK-based researcher and would be interested in being approached by UUKi with details of a potential partner for a Newton Fund collaboration, please fill in our online form once available, and your details will be added to our database. We will then get in touch if we receive a request for a UK partner from a researcher in a Newton Fund partner country who has a similar profile and is interested in applying for an open call.
Based on your research interests and proposed topic for collaboration, we will then contact you to suggest UK researchers or research groups with similar research interests and expertise in your subject area, who may therefore be interested in collaborating. We can also list your request on our opportunities for collaboration grid.
Please note:
- In order to be considered for Newton funding, your proposed research topic must demonstrate that it aims to contribute to the social welfare or economic development of the Newton Fund partner country. For a list of appropriate subject areas, please see the call guidelines of the call you are applying for.
- Please complete the partner request form as soon as possible following the launch of the call and no later than four weeks before the call deadline; applicants should allow at least four weeks to secure a partner at a UK institution.
Please only complete this form if there is an open call for which you meet the eligibility requirements. If you complete a form for a call that is not open or not currently inviting applications from your Newton partner country, UUKi will not be able to assist you. All open Newton Fund calls are listed here.
If you have any queries whilst completing this form, please email newton@international.ac.uk.
Newton Fund PhD applicants
UUKi operates a student support service for applicants for British Council Newton Fund PhD calls.
If you intend to apply for either a PhD placement or a full PhD scholarship under the British Council Newton Fund calls and would like UUKi's assistance with finding a UK host, please complete our form. The form will only be available if there is a call currently open.
Please note:
- The information that you provide in this form will be used to help us identify potential PhD supervisors and/or host UK universities. In order to do this, the details you provide may need to be shared with several universities.
- Before completing this form, please firstly ensure that there is a PhD call open that you are eligible to apply to. All open Newton Fund calls are listed here.
- Depending on which call you are applying to (PhD placement or full PhD), not all sections of the form will be relevant to you. Please try, however, to complete the form as fully as you are able to. Please note that PhD calls will not run in every Newton partner country.
- Please complete the host request form as soon as possible following the launch of the call and no later than four weeks before the call deadline; applicants should allow at least one month to secure a host UK institution.
If you have any queries whilst completing this form, please email newton@international.ac.uk.
For a full list of current calls, please visit the funding opportunities section of the Newton Fund website.
