Beyond the pandemic: What the digital transformation of Secure English Language Testing means for reaching international talent
Thursday 19 May, 3:003m - 4:00pm
The English language testing landscape is undergoing a radical transformation with a proliferation of new tests and test operators disrupting a previously static market. This trend was turbocharged by the pandemic which exposed the limitations of a test-centre only model and triggered the large-scale digitisastion of English proficiency assessments to enable ‘at-home’ testing. Fueling this growth is demand for international education both overseas through traditional student mobility routes but also in-country via transnational partnerships.
In this webinar, panelists from the Duolingo English Test, the first high stakes ‘at-home’ English proficiency test discussed insights from their latest report exploring the longer-term implications of at-home tests for English language testing policy. With 82 countries in the world lacking even one official Secure English Language Testing (SELT) centre, the case for innovation to support student access, reach talent and diversify application pools is clear. Drawing on fresh polling of Chinese and Indian prospective students, conducted by Public First, we discussed how student attitudes towards testing have changed and what this will mean for the future of digital testing.
- Andrew Howells, Assistant Director, External Affairs, Universities UK International
-
Simon Lebus (SELT industry strategy), Senior Advisor Duolingo English Test
Former Head of Ofqual, Former Group CEO of Cambridge Assessments -
Alina von Davier (test innovation), Chief of Assessment, Duolingo English Test

Internationalisation and the climate crisis: challenges and opportunities
Wednesday 22 June, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Higher education is international in its very nature with collaboration across borders, partnership development and global research activity all fundamental building blocks of institutional strategies and success. These elements contribute to solving many of the world’s most intractable problems. But international activity comes at a cost, of travel, for conferences, field trips, so-called ‘flying faculty’ and student mobility, as well as ever-increasing market for international students.
In this webinar, panellists shared perspectives from both Europe and the USA on how best institutions and sector organisations are tackling this innate tension. The recent launch of the CANIE Accord provided a suggested way forward, whilst UUKi’s recent report into how the climate crisis affects internationalisation gave a first indication into how international strategies are changing as a result. This webinar was a follow-on from the recent Leaders’ Forum, part of CANIE COP26 Climate Action Week, and aimed to stimulate further conversation between international education leaders on this topic for our time.
- Celia Partridge, Assistant Director, Partnerships and Strategic Insight, Universities UK International
- Piet Van Hove, Vice President, EAIE and Senior Policy Advisor, UAntwerp
- Dorothea Antonio, Deputy Executive Director, Knowledge Development, NAFSA: Association of International Educators
- Robin Shields, Professor of Education, University of Bristol
