Universities are nothing without their students. Our annual student experience conference addresses the most pertinent issues and challenges our students face. With the cost-of-living at the forefront of everyone’s minds, how can we support our students to get decent and affordable housing? How can we support their mental health and anxiety induced by rising costs?
We will also delve into topics such as transitioning out of university; the climate crisis; inclusive learning environments; student welfare and much more.
We’re delighted to announce that the conference will be chaired by Professor Karen Cox, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kent.
Join us in-person on 25 May in London to meet colleagues and discuss all things student experience. If you are unable to join in person, you can register for access to a livestream of the plenary sessions (breakout sessions will not be streamed).
Why should you attend?
Alongside informative, timely content from the most pertinent speakers on the topic, we will also be providing a wide range of opportunities to network, discuss, and make connections with colleagues within the sector.

This session unpacks the growing challenge of the cost of student accommodation, as well as the impact of the quality of accommodation on the student experience. Speakers will be tackling the questions of raising rents and the pressure on room availability, the impact they have on the student cost of living and how providers can respond.
The rising cost of living impacts different communities at different levels. The severity of the impact is varying across students in the UK, however, what is clear is that anxiety levels are growing, and money worries are having a negative impact on student mental health. This session will discuss research and recommendations as well as draw from lived experiences on how universities can support students through this difficult time.

This breakout session focuses on the intersection of the climate emergency with the student experience. There are many elements of the student experience such as international travel and commuting to university that add to our carbon footprint. This session will discuss how to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing opportunities for engagement and student satisfaction.

Arguably, student induction is one of the most important elements of the student experience. It is the first impression from enrolment and is a key contributor to the feeling of belonging, whilst tackling loneliness and isolation. This session will focus on creating an inclusive induction that does not centre around drinking and sports. What can student unions, student services and course teams do to design alcohol-free events and ensure that all activities and communications are inclusive to all students, particularly those with a disability?

The landscape of education is rapidly evolving due to the emergence of digital technologies. Students now embrace new ways of learning, engaging, and interacting with educational providers. As a result, providers must constantly adapt their technology and digital strategies to meet the ever-increasing demands of students. Students require systems that enable them to access their data quickly and efficiently, while still being able to take ownership of it.
To remain competitive, these technologies need to align with industry trends, making it easier for students to navigate their educational journey. During this conference session, industry leaders from TechnologyOne will share their OneEducation Solution's innovative tools and technologies, which empower students and enhance their educational experience.

What does it mean for our students to have a deep sense of belonging and how can this be facilitated? In this panel discussion, we will bring together four different perspectives on the ‘in vogue’ topic of belonging.
Recent research has cemented belonging as a core predictor of student success and a topic closely related to other key agendas, such as mental wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion efforts. However, efforts to improve students’ sense of belonging are not without challenge. This session will delve into the diverse experiences of our panellists and provide suggestions for where the sector needs to go next in our work on belonging.

As a small university, Plymouth Marjon lecturers and staff have the luxury of knowing all of their students personally (by first name). It’s made clear to students as they join the ‘family’, that they do not need to already know how to study; they will be taught that. With 25% of their student demographic registered with a disability, they have an ‘inclusion by design’ policy which supports every learner from every background throughout their entire learning journey, for a truly transformational higher education experience.
In this session, we will discuss how scaling-up student support services using technology has helped Plymouth Marjon improve access to personalised formative feedback for a wider pool of students, and how this is also applicable for any sized institution.
The aim of this session is to discuss how universities can support graduate employability through teaching, learning and assessment design. What more can be done to help prepare students to transition out of university and into the world of work and give them the life skills that they need to succeed?
Every staff member has a role to play when it comes to enhancing the student experience. This session explores the holistic approach required to ensure a joined-up approach across an institution, particularly ensuring academic engagement and collaboration with student engagement and student communication teams.
This keynote address focuses on adopting holistic approaches to tackling racialised inequalities in HE and highlighting the voices of the most marginalised communities. From access, participation and student satisfaction to closing ethnicity awarding gaps there is much to be done inside and outside the classroom. How can universities take transformative action such as collaborative working, valuing lived experiences and navigating intersectionality to create a truly inclusive culture and sense of belonging for all students?
