“We welcome the Government’s commitment to a detailed examination of the net benefits of international students. This is an opportunity to build on the considerable evidence that shows that international students have a very positive impact on the UK economy and local communities.
The UK currently welcomes 437,000 overseas students, making us the second most popular destination for international students after the US. Our research shows international student satisfaction in the UK is higher than in the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany or the Netherlands. The UK is the most recommended study destination at every level, when compared to our key competitors. Many students return home having built strong professional and personal links to the UK which remain long after they graduate. Others successfully apply for visas to undertake graduate jobs, adding to the contribution they make to the UK and enhancing their own career prospects.
These international students enrich our campuses and the experience of UK students. Research by HEPI and HEA shows that over three-quarters of students agree that studying alongside people from other countries is useful preparation for working in a global environment. 76% agree that it gives them a better world view. Exceptional levels of student engagement in the sector-wide #WeAreInternational campaign further underlines how UK students welcome their international counterparts.”
