The BEC.AR programme will award approximately twenty full scholarships to Argentinian students to complete a taught Master's degree in a STEM related subject at a UK university, with a September 2017 start.
Universities UK International (UUKi) will be administering the scheme in the UK on behalf of BEC.AR. The first call for applications opens this week.
UUKi and the Ministry of Modernisation of the Argentine Republic signed a contract for the extension of the Argentinian BEC.AR programme, which currently operates in countries including the US, France, Australia and Spain, to the UK.
This agreement embodies new developments in the relationship between the UK and the Republic of Argentina, only eleven months after the new Argentinian President Mauricio Macri was elected and affirmed his desire to strengthen ties with the UK.
It follows an encouraging meeting which took place early September 2016 in Argentina between Sir Alan Duncan, the UK Foreign Office Minister, and his Argentinian counterpart, Susana Malcorra. They pledged to work together more closely on a range of bilateral issues, including trade and security, so the agreement with BEC.AR is timely.
UUKi will work closely with host UK universities to facilitate the scheme. It will also act as a point of assistance and guidance to BEC.AR scholars throughout the application process and the duration of their stay in the UK.
The scholarship will cover academic tuition fees, travel expenses, a monthly maintenance allowance, health insurance and visa costs.
It is expected that the programme will also include funding for short term PhD mobility of Argentinian students to the UK next year.
'We are delighted to work with the Argentinian Government and the BEC.AR programme to warmly welcome twenty Argentinian scholars to UK universities.
'The international nature of our academic communities is a defining feature of the UK university sector. Seeing our two countries choose higher education as one of the first positive steps to strengthen ties is a real statement of the value that higher education plays in international relations.'
