UUKi and Mitacs launch summer 2021 UK-Canada research internship programme for undergraduates

Despite the challenges currently posed by the Covid-19 pandemic for research mobility, UUKi and Mitacs remain committed to their partnership, which aims to provide opportunities for UK students in Canada.

Universities UK International (UUKi) is inviting expressions of interest from UK universities to provide opportunities for their students to participate in a summer 2021 UK-Canada mobility programme with Mitacs. The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship programme will enable UK undergraduate students to have the opportunity to take part in research internships in Canada in summer 2021. The partnership will continue to enable students to benefit from international mobility opportunities when it becomes safe to do so.

Mitacs has committed to continuing to prioritise international research collaboration and mobility, and is therefore doubling the number of places available to UK undergraduate students from 20 to 40 for the programme’s 2021 iteration

The programme will operate on a co-funded model, with two thirds to be funded by Mitacs and the remaining third to be funded by sending UK institutions.

UK universities are currently being invited by UUKi to submit expressions of interest to co-fund up to 40 places for students to participate, with internships commencing in summer 2021. Interested universities can submit their expression of interest here.

As well as continuing to strengthen the UK-Canada bilateral relationship – and crucially strengthening links between UK sending and Canadian host institutions – the programme gives successful students the opportunity to carry out a 12-week fully supervised research project, in addition to making professional development and relationship building opportunities accessible to those participating. With additional benefits such as attendance at industry events, mentoring, and social activities, the internships will provide UK students a competitive academic experience in Canada whilst gaining valuable professional skills.

Interested universities can contact Sophie Da Silva, Partnerships Officer at UUKi, for further information: sophie.dasilva@international.ac.uk

Dr John Hepburn, CEO and Scientific Director of Mitacs, comments:

‘Mitacs is delighted to renew and further advance its partnership with UUKi. We look forward to 2021 and welcoming an additional number of undergraduate students from the United Kingdom to advance their research knowledge in Canada through this summer exchange program. The commitment and dedication of both Mitacs and UUKi in providing opportunities to young researchers as a means of rebuilding momentum in international exchange is an essential investment in finding solutions to the challenges that will face our world tomorrow.’

Vivienne Stern, Director, UUKi, comments:

‘UUKi is delighted to continue to work with Mitacs to increase opportunities for students to boost their graduate outcomes through this exciting mobility scheme. We are very pleased to continue to promote the value of outward mobility and international collaboration for undergraduate students, as well as to strengthen the UK’s partnerships with Canadian institutions.’
