Widening Participation in UK Outward Student Mobility: a picture of participation

3 Oct 2017, 11:00 - 12:00

Universities UK International (UUKi)’s Widening participation in UK outward student mobility project supports universities and colleges in developing and implementing effective strategies to increase participation in mobility programmes by students from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds. The project is intended to help achieve a year-on-year increase in students from widening participation backgrounds engaging with outward mobility programmes.

Evidence shows that students from disadvantaged backgrounds are least likely to access study, work or volunteering abroad. The project highlights five groups that are underrepresented in mobility: students from low socio-economic backgrounds, students from low participation neighbourhoods, black and minority ethnic students, students with a disability and students who are care leavers.

The webinar featured Katherine Allinson, Policy Researcher in Outward Mobility at UUKi, who highlighted key findings from the first part of the project: our report ‘A picture of participation’. This formed the foundation for a series of evidence based recommendations for improving the accessibility of international mobility for disadvantaged and under-represented students.

Following on from this one of our project contributors, Hannah Wilson, Global Mobility Manager from the University of Greenwich, shared her insights into their Global Greenwich Mobility Scholarship with us. The Scholarship is a tailored short-term summer mobility programme that doubled the universities outward mobility numbers.

Attendees were among the first to get a sneak peek into the second part of the project, a toolkit which we launched in December 2017 and is available here. If you missed it you can now watch the entire webinar below. You can also make sure you don't miss out on future events, conferences and webinars by following this link.
