Academics on the world stage
UK academics are helping to set the climate change agenda, and are consulted by national Government as well organisations on the international stage.  One of the most notable of course is Professor Nicholas Stern of the London School of Economics, who wrote the 2006 Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change.

Academic shows Copenhagen conference how to rescue rainforests

When government representatives from around the world gather for the crucial climate change conference in Copenhagen an environmental project spearheaded by a University of Huddersfield professor will help to show them the way ahead.

Professor Adrian Wood, of the University of Huddersfield, heads an EU-funded project in the forests of south-west Ethiopia.  Part of the solution to tackling climate change will be to retain the rainforests that play a massive role in absorbing carbon emissions.  The project is already proving highly successful in enabling communities to improve their livelihoods from the rainforests without destroying trees.

Professor Wood has been asked to provide information and illustrations to be included on an interactive on-line atlas that the EU’s international development agency – EuropeAid – has commissioned for the Copenhagen meeting.

The Non-Timber Forest and Participatory Forest Management Project in Ethiopia has been operational for six years and at present has three years left to run.

Please see the University of Huddersfield website for further details.

Academic helps to draft green statement for G8 leaders

A University of Salford academic has helped to create guidelines for universities to implement a global drive towards sustainable development – guidelines that were reviewed by the G8 leaders recently.

The declaration, which was drafted by Professor Brandon along with colleagues from Japan and Italy, was endorsed by the leaders of the major University organisations in the world including the G8, G20 and Developing Countries.  The declaration emphasises issues such as research into green technology, educating students and creating changes within universities' local areas.

The declaration will be sent to thousands of universities across the world where the authors hope it will be put into action.

Professor Brandon is known for his book Evaluating Sustainable Development – which he wrote with former PhD student Patrizia Lombardi – and covers many of the issues raised by the declaration. As part of the Declaration this book was distributed to the leading University Vice-Chancellors and Rectors attending the Summit.
