Overview:
What does the future hold for health research in the UK?
Fostering closer collaboration between higher education, the health service and the private sector is crucial to maintaining the UK’s global competitiveness in health research. It is also key to the delivery of high quality patient care.
A one-day conference at Universities UK will explore this critical challenge at a time of declining public funding and low economic growth.
The day will also examine the following issues: How do we attract and retain high-calibre researchers? What is the nature of the competition from overseas? What are the barriers to collaboration across different sectors?
The conference is supported by the Medical Schools Council, the Council of Deans of Health and the UK Research Integrity Office. It will take place on Thursday 11 March 2010 at Woburn House Conference Centre, London WC1.
The conference will be chaired by Professor Michael Farthing, Chair of Universities UK’s Health and Social Care Policy Committee. Confirmed speakers include:
- Professor Dame Sally C. Davies, Director General of Research and Development, Department of Health
- Professor Don Nutbeam, Vice-Chancellor, University of Southampton
- Dr Malcolm Skingle CBE, Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI)
- Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive, Wellcome Trust
The day will include a series of discussion groups, looking at issues such as: how to support health research careers and how to make UK teaching hospitals more attractive. The discussion groups will also showcase a best practice in successful collaboration between universities and trusts.
Who should attend? Colleagues from across higher education, the health service and the private sector, including:
- Clinicians
- Deans of health
