Overview:

The Private Higher Education sector is emerging as a growing force in many parts of the world and presents a range of potential opportunities and challenges.

A conference being organised by Universities UK and Guild HE on 18th March 2010 will examine the key issues around private provision such as quality assurance, regulation and funding, and will be an opportunity for consideration of collaboration and partnership.

The programme feature a numbeof high profile speakers including:

  • David Willetts MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills Professor Aldwyn Cooper, Chief Executive, Regent’s College
  • Professor Geoffrey Crossick, Warden, Goldsmiths, University of London
  • Professor Neil Gorman, Vice-Chancellor, Nottingham Trent University
  • Sally Hunt, General Secretary, University College Union (UCU)
  • Wes Streeting, President, National Union of Students

The event will bring together representatives from publicly-funded universities, government and private providers as well as key stake holders such as quality assurance bodies for an open discussion of these issues.

The conference will include the launch of a report commissioned by Universities UK to contribute to this debate.  The research undertaken by John Fielden (CHEMS Consulting) and Professor Robin Middlehurst (Kingston University) will:

  • identify the main providers and analyse the market context in which they have emerged
  • examine the nature of their operations and relationships
  • explore the implications for policy and practice at university and sector levels.

The report sets out 22 recommendations grouped by the audience to which they are addressed i.e. representative bodies, Universities UK, Ofsted, Government and Private providers. The conference will enable delegates to hear from the report’s authors and to discuss the implications both for UK Higher education and for their own institutions.
