Universities Scotland is the national council in Scotland of Universities UK. Its membership encompasses all the heads of the universities and higher education institutions in Scotland.
Universities Scotland was formed in 1992 under its original name, the Committee of Scottish Higher Education Principals (COSHEP).
In 1999, while preserving the autonomy of COSHEP, a formal relationship was established with the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals (CVCP), the representative body for institutions across the UK, and in August 1999, as the Scottish parliament came into being, COSHEP relocated from Glasgow to Edinburgh, to premises within the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
In 2000, CVCP re-branded to become Universities UK, and at the same time COSHEP became Universities Scotland.
