The minister will discuss the mental health taskforce and his perspectives on universities’ role in supporting the mental health of their students.

This session will provide an update on the charter programme and the award process, explaining the benefits of joining the programme, and lessons learnt.
In the context of student wellbeing and mental health early warning is key.
This session will explore the correlation between engagement, wellbeing and mental health. SolutionPath will draw on their experience of using engagement is a powerful proxy for identifying struggling students and how data can inform timely and proactive intervention to get upstream of potential crisis.
This session will look into the commitment element of the mental health taskforce, and discuss how universities can adapt and enhance their processes, and ensure they are building compassion into the academic process.
It is key that initiatives to support student are designed alongside students to be effective. This session will hear from case studies from University of Toronto, University of South Wales and King’s College London about how they have approached student engagement and co-design.
We will hear from SOS UK on their work to tackle student drug use, and a case study from one of the project pilot universities. This session will explore the frameworks used support this work, and what are the next steps which universities need to take.
This session will explore how the disruptions and anxieties of the pandemic, and shifts in the use of digital media have impacted upon the social confidence of students, and have promoted loneliness. A multifaceted approach to advancing peer support in universities and colleges could reverse these impacts, improve social confidence and connections, and help those struggling with loneliness find a sense of belonging and hope for their future.

This session will look at university partnerships with NHS services, and the challenges faced by universities and students in accessing aligned support.
Dr Omar Khan, Chief Executive Officer, TASO
In this keynote address, Dr Khan will discuss learnings from the TASO project to answer the question 'What works to tackle mental health inequalities in higher education?'
Professor Sir Steve West CBE, Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Officer, University of the West of England, Bristol
Professor West will reflect on progress made on supporting mental health at universities, and the importance that university leadership understands this priority and leads the transformative change. He will discuss the development of the Mental Health Leadership tool, to aid leaders to develop, support and get the best out of their communities of staff and students.
This session will explore case studies of innovative strategy and practice from across the globe, including Canada and South Africa.

John will give reflections on 10 years work on mental health in higher education - progress made, challenges ahead, hotdog fingers and parallel universes.
